Your motorcycle is more than just a joyride and the chance to conquer the open road—it’s an efficient, fast, and agile way to get from A to B. Commuting with these compact powerhouses saves you gas money and it’s a fun way to start your day, but it’s also a more dangerous means of transportation. With the right gear and accessories, though, you can negate many of the dangers posed.

We here at Langston Motorsports want to make sure you stay safe without losing out on the fun of your motorcycle rides, so we’ve put together a list of the items you need to safely commute with your bike. If you have more questions, or you’d like to browse the motorcycles we have for sale, contact our store in Perris, California. Our friendly and experienced staff will help find whatever you need at the prices you want!

Being Seen

Much of the fun of a motorcycle is thanks to how compact it is, allowing it to maneuver and reach places a car couldn’t. But that also means it’s not as visible on the road to other motorists. The best way to counter this is to keep plenty of space between you and everyone else, but in case they aren’t paying attention or you’re forced into close proximity, you’ll need something to help you stand out.

There’s gear you can equip yourself with to make sure you’re as visible as possible, giving other drivers every chance to notice you before an accident ensues. Some of these include reflective and neon-colored vests or reflective patches or tape on your riding gear. Even just wearing some brightly colored denim along with the typical black leather can be a big help.

Ability To See

Other motorists aren’t the only ones who’ll need to keep their eyes open for potential road hazards. You’ll need to shield your eyes from the wind and airborne debris like dust or dirt kicked up by other vehicles. We recommend a full helmet with a visor, though a less complete helmet and goggles will work if that’s more your style. The helmet will also need to fit you well and comfortably so that it can protect your head from any potential accidents and injuries.

Gloves

The cold winter months are more than uncomfortable—they can be actively dangerous! Cold hands run the risk of limited mobility and numbness, interfering with your ability to control your brake, throttle, and steering. You’ll want gloves that will keep your hands warm without overheating them. These gloves should also fit well, conforming to your hands enough that they won’t slide around, but that aren’t so tight that they restrict your movement.

Gloves will also help to protect the skin on your hands if you end up in an accident of some sort. They may not keep you from getting scraped up at all, but every little bit counts!

Hearing Protection

If you’ve ever gone over 40 miles per hour on your bike (which, let’s be honest, you have), you’re in danger of hearing damage. The high winds and roar of your engine can permanently damage your ears and cause hearing difficulties down the line. Always ride with earplugs of some kind to keep your hearing intact. Even if you’re wearing a helmet, you’ll need ear plugs or wax balls.

Riding Boots

As tempting and convenient as it can be to wear normal or work shoes on your ride, it’s a risk you can’t really afford to take. Invest in tailored motorcycle boots. These should go above your ankles and have sturdy toes and soles, and they can even improve your ride! Motorcycle boots will protect your feet and lower legs from spray and debris kicked up by other vehicles, the weather, and more. They’ll also have solid traction to help you stay in control on the road and on foot, and should be a more comfortable fit on your rides.

Neck Protection

Unless you wear turtlenecks on every ride, there’s some exposed skin on your neck between your helmet and your jacket that’s vulnerable to the elements and debris. As small as that gap in your protection might be, it can still cause problems in both comfort and safety. Wind, precipitation, and more can really wear you down. We recommend a balaclava or scarf to make sure you’re protected from head to toe.
