ATV Hunting Tips
An ATV can be a valuable asset on your hunting trip. Travel over a large area of land in no time at all to get to that perfect spot. Easily haul your game to a more convenient place to dress it (then easily haul it back to your rig). There are many ways an ATV makes the process and easier. Pick Your Location in Advance
You may be the most skilled hunter around, but it won't matter if you set up shop where no animals come into view. Finding the proper spot is your best way to set yourself up for success.
For example, if you are hunting large prey (such as elk, deer, and moose) you will want to look for areas that have their favorite types of vegetation. You can look for worn down trails that suggest frequent traffic - it could lead to you a commonly visited area by your game. Wherever you set up, try to pick a perch where the wind will blow in your face. It's a small annoyance, but it helps you stay downwind of your prey. That way, they won't smell you and leave. Using your ATV, you can scour the land in no time at all and find the perfect spot to hunt from.
Pack ATV Gear
When you hunt with an ATV, you'll want to be sure to pack along the right gear. A rifle scabbard will keep your weapon and scope secure while you transport it, which protects it from bouncing around in the bay area and keeps the elements at bay. A winch is useful for pulling your game out of the brush onto flat land (to make it easier to dress). Simply connect one end to your ATV and one to the animal. It never hurts to get a GPS for your ATV. You won't ever have to worry about getting lost (and you can save prime hunting spots as well for future reference).
Be Mindful of Daylight
It can be hard to find the time for a full-blown ATV hunting trip - you're going to want to stay as long as you can to make the most of it. But riding your ATV at night isn't a good idea. If you happen to get an animal, you'll struggle to dress and break it down with the fading daylight. You want ideal visibility for navigating back, which means heading home before the sun starts to set.
Staying Quiet
One struggle of ATV hunting is that an ATV tends to be quite loud...which can scare all your game away! There are a few ways you can help limit this obstacle. First, remove or strap down any loose metal. Second, use soundproofing material (such as rubber) to deaden any rattling noises. Third, some noises signal an issue. A whistling noise could mean your exhaust has a leak or a crack. A loud, whining noise in your brakes could signal issues with its components. If there are odd sounds, such as a whistling noise, take it in to get serviced.
