An ATV is a big investment, and it should be one you want to protect. One way you can do this is through regular maintenance. You can do a surprising amount of minor work on your ATV in your own garage or shed without ever having to call a mechanic, provided you have the correct tools. To help you assemble your own set of ATV maintenance tools, the fine folks at Langston Motorsports of Perris, California, have provided this list of their top choices for essential tools to have in your ATV toolkit.

Set Of Wrenches
Every good toolkit needs a set of wrenches, in both standard and metric measurements. You might already even have a set that you’ve purchased or inherited. If not, you can often find standard and metric wrenches bundled together to save money. You’ll also want to have a selection of allen wrenches and crescent wrenches to help with tune-ups.
Breaker Bar & Torque Wrench
A breaker bar is simply a large wrench with a long handle to give you increased leverage for removing stuck-on fasteners. A torque wrench works in a similar way, allowing you the force you need to loosen parts under high amounts of pressure and tighten them back the way they were. Both will come in handy for ATV maintenance.
Multimeter
This small device fits in your hand and measures electrical conductivity, letting you know where performance issues are robbing you of performance on your ATV. The multimeter measures voltage, amperage and resistance to help give you an idea of what’s wrong with your ATV’s electrical system. You can also use this valuable tool around your house.
Tire Pressure Gauge
Your ATV’s tires hold up its weight and yours as you ride, plus they tackle all that difficult terrain that can do real damage if you’re not keeping tabs on your tires. Use a tire pressure gauge to check the pressure on a regular basis and while you’re down there, look for bald spots, embedded objects and other flaws in your tires that will necessitate replacement. You can carry a tire repair kit on your ATV for emergencies when you’re out riding, too.
Air Compressor
An air compressor, while something of an investment, will help you inflate your tires to the manufacturer’s specific guidelines. This way you won’t have to head to the shop or the gas station to air up your tires every time they need a little more air. You can also use this on any other vehicles you own and find other purposes for it around your house, so it’s worth it to have an air compressor around.
Screwdriver Set
A good set of screwdrivers is extremely helpful in many applications and they’ll definitely come in handy when you’re working on your quad. You’ll want to have both flat and Phillips heads, as well as ergonomic and comfortable grips. Ratcheting screwdrivers can make your work a little faster, but the bits can be hard to keep track of.
Mallet
Carefully applied, a wooden or urethane mallet can be extremely useful on an ATV. You don’t want to use a metal hammer as it will quickly dent and damage paint and finishes, but a softer mallet will provide you with some force when you need it without hurting your quad.
